We could not be happier to welcome your daughters into Sigma Kappa with open arms! We know you have questions, so here's some answers...
Will my daughter perform poorly in school because she joined a sorority?
Of course not! Our Vice President of Scholarship dedicates her time to ensure that the sisters of our chapter are continuing to excel academically. We have adopted a scholarship program called 'Study Hours' where sisters complete a certain number of study hours each week. This program is monitored by our VPS to keep track of each sister's academic status. If a member is struggling or falls below a certain GPA, our VPS will act accordingly to make sure that member receives the help they need.
Will my daughter be taken care of and safe?
No matter what day of the week, on or off campus, safety is our main priority. Our Executive Vice President discusses rules and emergency info frequently so each sister is aware of her options in case of an emergency. As sisters, it is each of our duties to do everything possible to make sure that your daughter is taken care of no matter the circumstance. Campus/city police are just a phone call away if need be. As their home away from home, Sigma Kappa's goal is to create a fun-loving, safe environment.
Will my daughter be hazed?
Absolutely, 100%, NO. Sigma Kappa Sorority does not haze any of its members. Hazing goes against our values and we would NEVER want to make a sister feel uncomfortable or degraded.
How much does it cost to be in a sorority?
Each sorority has its own set of dues, A.K.A. payments. That being said, each chapter's dues differ depending on fees, events, national charges, etc. The payments may overwhelm you and your daughter at first, but our Vice President of Finance is here to help. She is willing to set up payment plans and even offers discounts and incentive programs to make sure you are able to keep up with dues. For more info and specifics about our dues, please contact us. Paying to be a part of our sisterhood is doable- don't let the dollar amount scare you away!
What are the benefits of being in Sigma Kappa?
Not only does Sigma Kappa allow you to build life long friendships, but it teaches your daughter so many important life lessons and values. Being a part of a family is the greatest benefit of all, but here are a few more.... First- There are plenty of leadership opportunities as well as service opportunities. All of our sisters are required to give back to not only our National Philanthropies, but to our surrounding community as well. Next- Being in Sigma Kappa benefits your daughter tremendously when applying for internships and jobs. Including sorority life on a resume leaves a great impression. Finally- Your daughter will meet a handful of new people and form everlasting relationships in Sigma Kappa, and in Greek Life as a whole here at Riverside. Joining a sorority gives your daughter the opportunity to better herself as a friend, leader, and a woman.
Your Daughter and Sigma Kappa
When the chapter is determining whom they wish to pledge, the chapter shall give careful consideration to the following relatives/step-relatives of collegiate members and active Sigma Kappa alumnae:
Sisters • Daughters • Granddaughters • Nieces
While Sigma Kappa strongly encourages chapters to invite legacies to join our membership, legacy status does not guarantee membership and chapters are not required to pledge legacies.
Sigma Kappa expects that all members will follow Sigma Kappa policy, college/university policy, and all local, state and federal laws. The Sorority expects her members will make informed, reasonable, and responsible choices regarding herself, her sisters, her campus and the national organizations safe. Sigma Kappa has a number of policies designed to reduce the potential for harm to our members and to address situations where issues have occurred. Sigma Kappa requires regular education for the members on these policies. Collegiate Chapters and members are expected to self-govern behavior when it does not align with our values. Our risk management policies help to inform the use of a standards council process to address situations where issues have occurred.
Each collegiate chapter sets minimum scholastic standards for its members to maintain. The standard of performance is set by the National Policy Handbook of Sigma Kappa. This reflects Sigma Kappa’s belief that individual excellence develops chapter excellence. Sigma Kappa chapters are expected to provide leadership in academics as well as in other areas of campus life. To learn more about the academic policies of Sigma Kappa, consult section VI of the National Policy Handbook.
SIGMA KAPPA SUPPORT
Sigma Kappa volunteers are truly the heart of our organization. Our volunteer leader’s commitment to Sigma Kappa helps to ensure the longevity of the sorority and helps to create lifelong members of Sigma Kappa. In addition to our national headquarters staff, Sigma Kappa collegiate chapters are supported by our volunteers who serve as mentors and friends. Each collegiate chapter is also paired with an alumnae chapter or ‘sister chapter’ because we know that collegiate/alumnae relations is an important part of member development
